Unscrewing the Bumbersnoot: In which Flywaymen Hijack Waistcoats & Weaponry Signed Editions (The Missing 500)

As many of you have noted, the 500 B&N signed editions of The Finishing School Book Three: Waistcoats & Weaponry have vanished.

Here they are, after I signed them, waiting to be shipped… somewhere

I suppose I should have known better than to chronicle the evils of the Picklemen. It’s never wise to go openly up against the Flywaymen either. And writing about both, publicly? They were bound to want revenge.

I don’t know how they got hold of those signed editions, but it seems they did. Since Barnes & Noble sent out cancellation notices over last weekend.

In all honestly, someone proverbially screwed the pooch.

Or should I say unscrewed the Bumbersnoot?

I don’t know what exactly happened. I’m getting conflicting reports and it is really hard to sort out the details. B&N says they never got them, my publisher says they most certainly sent them.

But the “why” is irrelevant to you, because you didn’t get your signed book. And I am a little ball of vibrating rage over this whole situation. I feel like I led you astray, and if you read my books, you know how important loyalty is to me.

[Offer no longer open, all bookplates have been sent out as of 01/01/2015.]

It’s not my custom to do bookplates but I do have a few from Little Brown (and I hope to get more) and some sign-able stickers, and there are a few lingering swaggy bits. If you ordered the signed book and it didn’t arrive and you still want my signature, please send me your address via the calling card feature on my website and I will pop one in the mail to you ASAP.

If you still really want an actual proper signed copy (of any of my books) you can always order one from Borderlands (my local indy in San Francisco). I went in special to sign this weekend. Either send them an email ([email protected]) or call (888.893.4008), they will ship pretty much anywhere (but you will have to pay shipping). If you are willing to wait a bit, I will even personalize your book, although that often has to hold until I carve out time to BART into the city.

I am so so so so sorry.

If it is any consolation, I have taken to calling them the Missing 500, and being constantly reminded of the Battle of Thermopylae. (I know, I know, that was 300.) But it bring me weird consolation to think that somewhere the 500 signed copies lie:

“Oh stranger, tell the Carriger readers that we lie here, trusting Barnes and Noble’s words.”

Or something like…

Oh dear they have driven me to defame history.

I really must stop now.

How strange! And frustrating. Someone somewhere just received a very large shipment and must be very confused.

I'll admit, I was frustrated when I received B&Ns notice, but I figured it was on there end. I don't like bookplates, so clearly only one option remains. I must keep my eyes open for a signing in my area! Getting to meet the brain behind such lovely characters would be worth the wait. 🙂

It's OK – certainly not your fault, and you are so gracious to offer the book plates! I'm 90+ pages into the standard hardback, and enjoying it *immensely*!

Maybe I will make it to Steampunk Empire Symposium again (I went in 2014) and visit you in person, instead of via Sounds of Steam/Talk of the Tavern. If I do, I will bring a few items for you to sign. 😉

Now, back to laughing out loud at "W&W" and making everyone at work look at me like I'm insane.

I was at WFC and skipped seeing you at the mass autographing since I had a book coming. Was more than a bit miffed to get the cancellation notice afterwards and also find out that the dealer's room didn't have any copies to purchase and have you sign. 🙁
