A Classic Gail Carriger Event: Sumage Solution Launch at Borderlands

Well, hello my darling Gentle Reader. I thought you might like to see what a classic me-event looked like. Here is what happened at Borderlands the weekend before last for the Launch of The Sumage Solution.

The Display

All the pretty books set out for sale including my novellas, my very first book, and my most recent book. Borderlands is always good about guessing what other book of mine attendees might want to buy.

Also I signed everything that was left over (which, frankly, wasn’t a whole lot) so if you want anything signed now is the time to ping them: 888-893-4008 or email office@borderlands-books.com

The Event

I was a little late due to traffic, bustled in and posed a bit so the outfit could be captured for posterity. (Terribly important.) I often forget to take fashion pictures so remembering to do so is rather exciting. You can see my post all about the fashion details on Retro Rack. TK

Since I do events at Borderlands pretty regularly, Jude (manager and all around super-star) didn’t bother to introduce me, I just introduced myself. And dove right into the Q&A. OK not right in…

First, Jude brought up a lovely tray of tea for me. They stock Assam pure leaf ‘specially for me. (Or I like to pretend that they do it for me.)

Which meant I was then chatting while drinking tea. (Much was remarked upon my coordinating pink with the Borderlands’ curtains.)

In case you hadn’t guessed my events are pretty casual and friendly. Generally, I answer a few questions (from myself) to start, things I know people want to hear, and then the audience starts asking. My readers are always a great group and lots of fun. And yes, I do talk about stuff in person that I can’t talk about online.

People line up to get stuff signed.

And I signed stuff.

And talked too much. Afterwards it was time for a few photo ops.

This is one of my favorites: An editor and her authors! That’s my developmental editor, Sue Brown-Moore, in the middle with me & Lea Kirk author of Prophecy.

The Sumage Solution Launch Party At Borderlands in San Francisco

Tomorrow I’ll be doing something fun, Gentle Reader. It’s the kind of thing I can only do with an indie book. I’m having a launch party before the book is officially on sale.

I know, right? But… I CAN.

(Insert evil laugh here.)

For those of you in the Bay Area, here are the details…

Early Borderlands Gets The Book

July 15, 2017, 3pm
Sumage Solution Launch Event at Borderlands Books
Call ahead to reserve a signed copy (yes they’ll ship so you’ll get it ASAP, and yes I will dedicate it to your or to a friend or to an elder god, you know, whatever you want):

888-893-4008

The book will be available to buy (at this event ONLY) three days BEFORE official release. And yes I’ll be signing there, if you are coming to the event.

If the book isn’t enough of a draw, I’ll be there nattering away at the Borderlands Cafe where they have lovely nibbles and delicious tea. I know this about the tea because they asked me which kind I recommend. And now they stock it. This is how awesome they are.

Miss Carriger at Borderlands back in 2013

Borderlands is a truly wonderful little independent bookstore, even if you can’t make my event you should make them one of your stops if you’re ever in San Francisco.

Borderlands for the Holidays

Posted by Gail Carriger

Recently Borderlands saved me by stepping in to host my last signing of 2012. Since this event happened unexpectedly, during the holidays, I was honored that a dozen or so people made the effort to come say hi. There was even press coverage! At least half of attendees drove over from the Cow Palace after Dickens and then parked in the Mission, on a Saturday night, to see me! Now THAT makes me feel special.

Jared & Gail
Jared and I at Borderlands

I hopped BART, an uncomfortable experience at the best of times. Whenever I travel on public transit I can’t help but fantasize about Victorian trains ~ first class of course! How wonderful would it be to someday take the Orient Express? (There’s a wonderful BBC documentary on the train with David Suchet of Piorot fame.) unlike BART, Borderlands was a lovely and welcoming as always!

Gail at Borderlands
If you’re interested in my outfit I did a Retro Rack post on the subject.

Books were signed, photos were taken, swag was given out. (I never have much swag so I just took a few odds and ends from my publicists as an apology for having to cancel the Dickens event.) And I received tribute!

Tribute
Citron, book, pocket watch

After scenting my office beautifully for a day, the citron went off to a new life in marmalade. The pocket watch will make an appearance at an upcoming steampunk event (hopefully meaning I won’t be chronically late for all my panels). And the book is sitting patiently on my bedside table.

Thanks everyone so much and have a happy holiday! May your break be filled with Indy Bookstores coming to your rescue, tenticular citrus fruit, and steampunk goodness!

Dickens Signing Moves to Borderlands

Posted by Gail Carriger

My dear Gentle Reader, I profoundly apologize for having to cancel my trip to Dickens Fair tomorrow. Please don’t worry there’s nothing wrong with me, unless you count a twitchy shoulder and a brutally unmanageable first draft. (Yes, I believe the two might be linked.) It seems we are no longer welcome at the venue, and as I have said before, feeling rather vampiric, I don’t go where not invited.

On the very bright side:

The very fine people at Borderlands have opened their doors. I know it’s not quite the same as Dickens, but I will be sitting and signing starting at 5 pm in that very fine establishment just down the way. (Bonus they are near a BART station!)

Borderlands Chatting

Self at my very first Bookstore signing ~ Borderlands 2009

Please drop by whenever you can to say hi if nothing else. (Also Borderlands Cafe is the only place in the Bay Area where you can buy a cup of my favorite tea, they import it from England special!)

I imagine it’ll go until 6, later if needed. There will be no audience seating and I won’t be doing a reading but you can ask me any question you like and I promise to answer in truthful confidence.

Thank you Borderlands!!!!

So for those of you who will still be attending Dickens, I hope you have a marvelous time, remember the Rum Cake is amazing! And for those of you who were only going to see me and can’t make Borderlands, my next big Bay Area Event is in April at the Nova Albion Steampunk Exhibition.

I have tried to get the message out in every way I can, but I’d certainly appreciate your help in the matter of spreading the word to those who may not know.

P.S. I may just be bringing a few fun goodies to give away to those who show up first!
