Giveaway Goodie Box

Posted by Gail Carriger

First up, Gentle Reader, I have a Facebook Live next Tuesday, March 14, at 4:30pm PST on my Author Page for no good reason, just to say hi. Feel free to come by and hang out of ask questions. If you can’t make it, I’ll post it to my YouTube channel, Amazon Author Central, and Goodreads videos within a few days.

An now…

A Madame Lefoux Goodie Box!

Recently, Gentle Reader, I ran this poll on Twitter:

Why did I do it on Twitter? Instant gratification. And anyone can participate. (Facebook only lets admins see the first 100 answers, then requires us to pay to see the results. Because… Facebook.)

Anyhoo, the people have spoken!

So March’s Chirrup giveaway is, indeed a Goodie box. In honor of the Romancing the Inventor Audiobook release, this box is Madame Lefoux themed.

Here’s a peek inside…

Contents:

How to enter:

You must be subscribed to my monthly newsletter, the Chirrup, before Saturday for this particular prize. If you are already subscribed then you can enter via the Chirrup, after you receive it. In the newsletter, there will be a link to a form and a code word to enter.  If you want to sign up for the Chirrup you can do so here.

Why sign up?

This is how I run most of my giveaways these days.

Newsletters come once a month with insight into my books and further plans (before being announced anywhere else). Occasionally there is a special Chirrup when I have a release. In case you wondered, I also pick my mods, beta readers, and early reviewers exclusively off of the newsletter. So it really is a good idea to get it and read it, if what you want from me is more books, sooner, and if you want influence over what I write next this is it.

This particular give away is open to everyone, everywhere, so long as you subscribe to the Chirrup before it goes out Saturday. Winner will be random number generated from entries.

Good luck!

{Gail’s monthly read along for March is Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith.}

It’s Give Away Time! Court of Fives, Waistcoats & Weaponry, Beka Cooper

Posted by Gail Carriger

Giveaway time!

It’s a YA special here in the wild lands of the authorbeast. I have two copies of Court of Fives, September’s book group pick to give away!

I’ll be picking two winners. Each winner will also get a signed hardcover copy of Waistcoats & Weaponry, and one will get (my personal) trade paperback editions of the Legend of Beka Cooper trilogy by Tamora Pierce.

All you have to do is post a picture (of yourself, or your pet, or a pretty garden, or a foreign location or whatever silliness you like) featuring one of my books or one of Kate’s books. Please post in a venue that can be linked publicly.

Giveaway open to all and can be entered using this Google form. You’ll be asked for the photo link when you enter. One photo entry per person, please. (Chirrup subscribers, you know what you can do.)

Address and email are required, but will be kept entirely private. If you don’t want to input such information, then this giveaway is not for you. Under 18, please obtain permission from your parents first, or have them do it. Sorry. It’s just when I go with email only, inevitably I get bounces and mistypes and it’s easier simply to request the address up front.

Giveaway closes September 13th midnight Pacific Time.

Bumbersnoot Art!

Posted by Gail Carriger

Bumbersnoot is a new and excitingly silly character in the up-coming Finishing School series.

On his first introduction…

It had four legs—four very short legs—and a small, spiky tail. Steam emanated slightly from its underbelly, and smoke came out from under its leather earflaps. It looked a little like one of those sausage dogs the Germans were so fond of.

Sometime later . . .

Sophronia hesitated, and then—because everyone seemed to have forgotten him and he looked so forlorn—she scooped up the sausage dog mechanimal and hid him in her large pinafore pocket.

Sophronia names her new pet Bumbersnoot. And later introduces him to another new friend who has the following opinion . . .

“He’s quite the little beauty, isn’t he?”

Bumbersnoot had a long, sausage-like body, and while he was mostly bronze, it was clear he had some brass and iron parts, so that he was rather a patchwork. Fond of him though she was, “little beauty” was not a phrase Sophronia would have used to describe him.

“If you say so.”

A little while ago I ran an art contest and here are some images of Bumbersnoot!

Book News:
Still slaving away at Prudence. Nothing new on the radar right now.

Quote of the Day:
“Most of the recipes given under fist and eggs are suitable for breakfast, while a variety of appetizing little dishes can be made by using white China scallop shells, and filling them with various mixtures. And inch or two deep of nicely-minced chicken, covered with tomato or brinjal [eggplant] scallop, or with a nicely-seasoned batter – the whole to be crumbled over and baked – is always liked. Hunter’s sandwiches [cold meat in bread], kromeskys [croquettes made of minced meat ir fish rolled in bacon or calf’s udder and fried], and croutons [small pieces of toasted or fried bread added to soups and used to garnish stews] of all descriptions are also suitable, but it should be remembered that any elaborate side-dish has too great an apparent connection with yesterday’s dinner to be agreeable to the fastidious. Indeed, this lingering likeness to the immediate precedeing meal is always to be striven against; and the mistress of the house where you have duck for dinner, and duck stew next morning at breakfast, may be set down as a bad manager.”
~ Steel & Gardiner, 1888

Here’s the blurb:

A Fantasy Hat Cameo to appear in a novel by Gail Carriger.

Gail Carriger is pleased to offer a Fantasy Hat Cameo for inclusion in one of her up-coming Parasol Protectorate universe novels. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Worldbuilders fundraiser.

Gail will work with the winner to describe a hat (or sketch, or photo, or real life headpiece) to appear in a Parasol Protectorate Abroad or Finishing School book. Put a bonnet on a vampire queen or a steampunk topper on your favorite drone. Who knows, if it’s truly outrageous, perhaps even Ivy herself will give your hat a twirl.

Contact details with Gail to be set up following the auction.

So this is both a contest and a peek into Etiquette & Espionage. Immediately upon arriving at school Sophronia gets embroiled in a stand off battle and meets her first mechanimal.

“Name the characteristic traits of the ancient Scotch Highlanders.
Fidelity, hospitality, and great family pride.
What were their dress and character?
They wore a plaid made of woollen stuff, or tartan, which either hung down from their shoulders, or was fastened with a belt; from this belt hung their sword, dagger, knives, and pistol; a large leathern purse hanging before, adorned with silver, was always a part of the chieftain’s dress: their patience was unwearied, their courage undaunted, and their honour unsullied.”

I hope you are going about looking fabulous today, eating things that are not good for you, and generally getting in touch with the silly and the fun. I’m dressing up as Julie Newmar and heading into San Francisco despite rain, crazy city parting, and the Giant’s Victory Parade. Wish me luck! Mostly, wish me the benefit of my hair staying in place?

Just a note to say the name a Finishing School class contest (win 1 of 20 ARCs) ends officially tonight. More precisely, it probably ends when I haul my sorry self out of bed tomorrow and close comments. If you win, you’ll be notified by my publishing house at which point they will ask for your mailing address.

Also both Timeless (in Paranormal Fantasy) and Soulless Vol. 1 (in Graphic Novels & Comics) have been nominated for Goodreads Choice awards. If you feel inclined to vote, I’d be most grateful.
