7 Covers Gail Loves

Posted by Gail Carriger

I’ve been thinking a great deal about cover art recently. For no particular reason, Gentle Reader, just because. It’s no secret that, no matter what the words within, cover art counts for a large majority of sales in my business.

All too often you see authors complaining about cover art, I actually really like most of mine. Even those that initially disappointed me I learned to appreciate eventually. So this is not going to be a blog about that.

As I noodle about my daily toils, I encounter any number of books the large variety of which have covers that, frankly, turn me off. I don’t want to be one of those people who doesn’t buy because of the cover. My favorite author of all time, Tamora Pierce, seems to have generated some kind of vendetta against her on behalf of her marketing house because her recent covers really are horrendous. But, like I said, I don’t really want to go there.

What I want to do is simply show you a few covers that I love. These aren’t books I have necessarily read, but I might simply because the covers are so fantastic.

Sunset Rising

The Shivered Sky (which is also a great title)

Way better than her US cover

Crown of Midnight

The Palace Job

I’m no art director to render decisions on design and marketing. But I do think of myself as an aestheticist. I like pretty things and I’m attracted to images and balance that looks good, to colors that jive, to images that hint at story without simply being an almost photographic rendering of a fantasy scene in the book (yawn). I also prefer the woman look tough and covered, not out of prudishness, just in a lust for cosmic balance. If I never see another tramp stamp cover, headless torso female, I’ll be all too happy.

So there it is a glimpse into my particular taste in covers.

How about you, any favorite covers?

Books you picked up just because of the cover?

Thoughts on the evolution of cover art?

Soulless Vol 3 Manga, Will There Be More?

Posted by Gail Carriger

Today (November 19, 2013) the third volume in the manga adaptation of my books hits store in print form. Soulless Vol. 3 is the adaptation of Blameless, and will be the last in the series.

Wait! Did you say it’s the last installment of the manga?

Yes, it looks very like. REM is a little burnt out on the project, it’s been years of her drawing my characters, and I imagine she wants to draw her own (or something else, or nothing at all) for a while! I understand her feelings entirely and think Blameless makes a good ending for the manga. Plus, she included a special bonus ending. Also, frankly, it was a little odd to think about how to manga-up an inconvenienced Alexia for Heartless.

I think the first three hold as a trilogy. I’m happy with the decision, but since the manga creation process has been nothing but fun for me, I am a little sad to see that aspect end. I know many of you will be disappointed, unfortunately it is what it is.

I know you might be upset, but I do hope you understand why. And remember the last two books are waiting for you in their original form.

Madame Lefoux and Alexia cabinet card from Soulless Vol. 3

Tell us more about Soulless Vol. 3

I think this one may be the best. Perhaps it’s because Madame Lefoux gets so much screen time. Perhaps it’s the adventure format with dashing across Europe giving REM ample opportunity to exercise her mad landscape and steampunk skills. Perhaps it’s the happy ending, and an extra little dose of pleasure that came directly from REM’s imagination and which will satisfy many fans in ways I never did.

Is the series popular in Japan?

(via LadyAvalon in my Reddit AMA)

I believe the books are popular in Japan. My publishing house there is quick to do the translations and they were one of the first to buy the series: both good signs. But I don’t know for certain.

The manga has nothing to do with my Japanese translations. It’s done by Yen, one of a few American-based manga houses (hence the reason the book is read from left to right).

How’d the manga of Soulless came to be?

The head publisher of Yen and I met at BEA in 2009 and he complemented Soulless. I love manga so I got excited over his books. He hinted if I were ever interested in a graphic novel of my work… Was I ever! After Soulless did well, we pinged him to see if they were still interested in a manga adaptation and they were. They found REM, my amazing artist, and ta-da! I feel super lucky, it’s rare for any author to get a graphic novel adaptation unless they are crazy popular like George R.R. Martin. However, Japanese publishers remain uninterested in the manga. But recently the manga sold into translation to both France and Germany.

What about a manga of The Finishing School Books?

No word and, so far, no interest. I’d certainly be open to the possibility, although nervous that nothing could equal what a wonderful experience I had with the Parasol Protectorate adaptations.

Conall & Lyall cabinet card.

What else is going on?

1. I just returned home from Canada and my last event of 2013 (so much catch up to come).
2. Curtsies & Conspiracies made #5 on NYT YA Hardback bestseller list, THANK YOU so much for buying it!
3. I have an interview in Parade Magazine all about Curtsies.
4. We’re training a cat.

The Manga of Blameless Releases Tomorrow!

Posted by Gail Carriger

Well, Gentle Reader, I’m sure you may have guessed life is pretty crazy these days. So many launches (E&E Trade, C&C new, Book of the Dead, Fairy Debt, Crudrat kickstarter) and winding up the madness, coming in at the finish:

Soulless the Manga Vol. 3

This is the graphic novel adaptation of Blameless, Book 3 in the Parasol Protectorate series. It goes on sale tomorrow, November 19. Here’s a little teaser.

This is the US release date, it will also be available as an ebook at that time. However, it may not be available in your area or at this time for these reasons. Since I am away from my computer at a convention in Canada right now, I won’t be able to answer any additional questions about the release at this time, for which I do apologize. I’ll be back online the day after the release.

To the best of my knowledge, this will be the last of the Soulless manga. I feel both blessed and lucky to be one of the few authors to get a graphic novel adaptation of her work, and Yen has been a real pleasure to work with the entire time. Those of you who have read Heartless and know how manga art works can probably guess why. Also REM’s talent is amazing, and I think we can understand that she might want to work on her own stuff for a change.

As a semi spoiler teaser for those of you unhappy with me for a certain romantic twist in the book Blameless, you may be pleased to find that in this adaptation things come out a little differently for two well loved and extremely stylish characters.

Events This Weekend

Posted by Gail Carriger

Hello my lovely Gentle Reader, tomorrow I will be doing two local Bay Area events. I will have a few fun bits of swag to give away and, as ever, I will be ready and willing to answer all your burning questions (with greater completeness and honesty in person then on the interwebs). So please come out and say hi?

San Leandro Library (San Leandro, CA) Saturday, Oct. 12, 2:00 PM ~ Reading, Q&A, Signing

Kepler’s Books (Menlo Park, CA) with the wonderful Suzanne Lazear Saturday, Oct. 12, 6:30 PM ~ Talk, Q&A, Signing

Also, if you happen to be at New York Comic Con, it might be worth your time to source and stop by the Yen Booth and speak unto them the code word “Professor Lyall.” Yen is my awesome manga publisher and they are giving away some pretty fantastic cabinet cards from the upcoming Soulless Volume 3.

Cabinet cards!

I know, right? Aren’t they marvelous? I haven’t seen them in person yet but I can’t wait. (And isn’t that manicure to die for?)

Anyway, go by the booth with code word “Professor Lyall” to get yours. While supplies last.

And if I get mine before the end of my manga contest you might find a few slipped into your winning copies of Vol. 2, but rest assured I have fun other bits of swag I’m already planning on including.

Before you ask: I’m really trying to get to NYCC at some point in the next few years. It’s looking like 2015, hopefully for the launch of Prudence. Fingers crossed, nothing is set or settled yet. For one thing, I have to finish the rewrite of the book on schedule and such. For another, I need ot actually be invited to come and get on programming. Not so easy as you might think.

Anyway, if I see you, or Yen sees you, or neither, I hope you all enjoy your weekends!

Cover for Soulless the Manga Vol III (AKA Blameless)

Yen Press has released the cover art for Soulless the Manga Vol. III (the adaptation of Blameless).

Soulless Vol 3

I hope you are as thrilled as I am. I do so love REM’s artwork and I have confidence in her as I believe both the previous volumes have shown how good her voice meshes with mine.

The print release is currently scheduled for November 2013. Although that date subject to change if REM needs more time. We want beautiful drawings and are willing to wait.

In the interim, the chapters are serialized by subscription, online in Yen Plus as before. So if you can’t wait and want to get it in bite size segments (the way I do) that’s how to do it.

Quote of the Day:
Beth sent me this via Goodreads
Teacher Arrested
A public school teacher was arrested today at John F. Kennedy International airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney General Eric Holder said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement.
He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.
‘Al-Gebra is a problem for us’, the Attorney General said. ‘They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values.’ They use secret code names like “X” and “Y” and refer to themselves as “unknowns” but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, “There are 3 sides to every triangle.”
NOTE – Beth’s (retired) teacher friend replied to the above with this come back:
The solution to this (in)fraction is plane and solid, requiring simply the right angle.

In Which Gail Reviews Hysteria

Posted by Gail Carriger

I finally saw Hysteria. I liked it. Funny and fun and good costumes and an amusing foray into the quirks of medical history.

I like Maggie Gyllenhaal very much as an actress, but I don’t think this is her best effort. Her accent slipped up a few times and I was always very conscious of her acting, if you know what I mean? It was like she was trying to be Minnie Driver. The length of the courtroom scene was rather jarring, and (like the courtroom scene in Dangerous Beauty) is destined to be fast forwarded every time one rewatches.

I thought Felicity Jones rather stole the movie, and is maturing into the kind of young lady I could see play Prudence in the new series. Of course, one spend the entire film waiting for Rupert Everett to reappear. But when is that not the case? I believe I am waiting for Rupert Everett to reappear right this very moment.

In summation, I laughed out loud several times. I would certainly say this movie is worth renting. It’s a nice break to have a costume drama that is funny and light and stays that way.
