Podcasting Chapter 1 of Soulless (Parasol Protectorate Special Extras)

So I’m a podcast fan, Gentle Reader. You may have garnered as much from reading the “music” line on this blog, or from my general comments and posts regarding podcasts, or from my array of podcasting-inclined Facebook and twitter friends.

The addiction is, as so many things are, my parent’s fault. I grew up without a TV. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I loved to read and that was mostly what I did, but sometimes I wanted to do other things like eat. And during those times I listened to books on tape. Then I stopped, grew up, and started to travel places.

It was like magic when the world gave me podcasting. I mean music is all very well and good but to get stories and information, tailored to my taste, downloaded at will? Heaven.

So J. Daniel Sawyer and I were sitting about one afternoon, as you do, and he turns to me and says, “We should podcast the first chapter of Soulless.” He had that mercurial twinkle in his eye that indicated, as surely as anything, that the games were afoot. (I should preface this by saying that Dan and I became friends after he spent an evening learning about body casting and the naked model – who happens to be my beta – dragged him out to a Medieval kiln firing. These things happen with my friends.)

The issue, of course, was that I’d sold audio rights to The Parasol Protectorate to Orbit. And, before you wince at me, yes, I knew what I was doing, don’t fuss. Luckily, my publishing house is a forward thinking kind of establishment so when I went, hat in hand, to see if they would let me podcast the first chapter they said, without dissembling, the marketing-equivalent of, “Sure” pat pat “cute little gumptiony author beast.”

A few months later finds myself, my mother, Miss Kalandar of the Brass Needles podcast, George, and Chris Lester of the Metamor City podcast crammed into Kitty and Dan’s tiny little studio, learning the fine art of audio machinations. Then Dan, who is brilliant, whisks away the raw data and pings me in the wilds of Peru three weeks later with a charming rendition in full cast with extensive audio effects, of my own work.

I mean, how fantastically wonderful is that? See why I love podcasters?

So here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the audio drama sample of the first chapter of Soulless. I hope you enjoy it!

Enjoy? I LOVED it! I find myself listening to it at least once a day!

I really hope Orbit considers contracting them to do the audiobook!?! Any chance of that happening? A full-cast was perfect for your book!
