Book Pick: A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole (Coop de Book)

I’m picking not just a new book to me this month, Gentle Reader, by an entirely new author. I know it’s odd to see a contemporary romance pop up amongst my picks, but the blurb people, the blurb!

Plus I think it’s time for us to break out of our collective shells and try something new.

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

Aggressive combative lady versus Scotsman. Weapons making. Grumpy hero. Plus a little makeover action a la Biffy or Lord A?

Yes please!

New York City socialite and perpetual hot mess Portia Hobbs is tired of disappointing her family, friends, and—most importantly—herself. An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she’s capable of. Turns out she excels at aggravating her gruff silver fox boss…when she’s not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.

Tavish McKenzie doesn’t need a rich, spoiled American telling him how to run his armory…even if she is infuriatingly good at it. Tav tries to rebuff his apprentice—and his attraction to her—but when Portia accidentally discovers that he’s the secret son of a duke, rough-around-the-edges Tav becomes her newest makeover project.

Forging metal into weapons and armor is one thing, but when desire burns out of control and the media spotlight gets too hot to bear, can a commoner turned duke and his posh apprentice find lasting love?

It’s feels so much like an awesome modern version of Conall and Alexia that I just could NOT resist picking this book.

That said I haven’t read Alyssa Cole before. So you can blame the Whoa!romance and When in Romance podcasts for this pick.

Update: 8.14.18

I’m afraid I didn’t finish this book. Honestly, I just found it dull. I wasn’t bad, just not to my taste. I picked up and read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda instead. Which I very much enjoyed (appended a review to my slamming of the movie).

Hello! I greatly enjoy your book recommendations — thank you! I’ve been wondering for a little bit when you use “coop de” whether you mean “coup de” as in “coup d’etat” or “coup de grace”? I’m not completely fluent in French (or maybe you even mean something else entirely that I don’t know about!), but I just thought I’d mention it in case it was a spelling error. Have a great day/evening!

I’m so glad, I hope you enjoy this one. Nope I mean coop, as in chicken coop. It’s a play on words and a tie in to the idea of Carriger Pigeons.
