The blog post I directed you to for more cozy book suggestions is here.

Lovely-Odd Questions I Answered

  • What other country would I live in?
  • What I drink when I am not drinking tea?
  • Do I have any weird talents like folding your tongue in a taco? (I demonstrate one skill.)
  • What are the only 3 foods I really will not eat? (Otherwise I genuinely with try anything.)
  • What weird human foods does my cat, Lilliput, like to eat?
  • As an archaeological ceramicist am I also a potter? Here’s a tiny photo of one of my old pieces (sorry it’s all I got).

Author Questions I Answered

  • Do I ever work on more than one story at a time?
  • Some Bridgerton thoughts as a consumer of romance books versus historical adaptations versus author perspective.
  • Which one of my books am I most proud of?
  • Has any audience reaction to a book release ever surprised me?
  • How to find and developed a writer-community + suggestions for those in very rural areas.
  • Following up on a NaNoWriMo project. What is the next step after finishing a draft? What did I learn about my process? Any advice?
  • Any / how much research into ASD / aspie did I do for Percy’s romance?

Reticence

I hope you enjoyed the video!

I hope this it isn’t rude to make a comment on a previous post (it’s maybe locked because it’s older? I couldn’t comment there.) I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the BL recs and for the treasure trove of that comment thread. You are helping me make it through pandemic lock down, and if you are still into this genre…I’d love to know what you think of recent eps/shows.

For some reason WordPress stopped allowing comments on that post, I think there are just too many. And yeah, I’m still deep in the genre and I have a ton to recommend that have happened since then. Here are some quick picks:

Cherry Magic (Japanese BL short series) https://irozuku.org/fansub/tag/cherry-magic/ I loved it. Made me so happy. So light and fluffy and sweet and mushy but also cheeky and self referential, plus it had ace representation!
Restart After Come Back Home (beautiful Japanese movie) https://www.ichihachisubs.com/restart-after-come-back-home Visually stunning and mostly about family, reconciliation, and finding out who you are and where you belong in the world, but also has a sweet little romance.
Tonhon Chonlatee (about to end, classic Thai BL) it’s a bit slap happy and trope overburdened but it has GREAT representation of queer friends and found family; He’s Coming to Me (older but rereleased) I talked about this in my newsletter it is a WONDERFUl paranormal romance series; Still 2gether (the follow up to 2gether that I thought was slightly better than the original) all from Thai studio GMMTV on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/gmmtv/videos
Oxygen the series, also one YouTube (SO GOOD) one of my favorites from the end of last year, quiet and low angst and a bit stiff but weirdly comforting.
Ingredients the series, has a happy for now ending and is technically a long running advertisement for Central Retail (supermarket chain) but the leads have wonderful chemistry, very slow burn friends to lovers, and Jeff (the musician character, Win) is actually a wonderful singer.
Wish You: Your Melody In My Heart from Korea which is now on Netflix as a movie called Wish You. It’s a bit insta-love but the pining lead is really good at pining and being all nervous and sweet about it and the score is decent.
Also on Netflix the charming Pinoy series, Gameboys. I enjoyed this a lot, not enough to do a full rewatch but it’s gotten some well deserved accolades.

There are some new ones airing right now that are really knocking my socks off, like Color Rush, but they are much harder to get hold of and not ended yet so I am not certain they will end happily or not. I can’t say enough good things about Color Rush, it’s truly brilliant. I’m also watching and enjoying: We Best Love: No. 1 For You out of Taiwan, which I am pretty sure will end in a cliff hanger; and You Are Ma Boy (Vietnamese with terrible subs but it’s a stroppy cafe boy meets pop idol and I kinda can’t help but love it, just started, on Youtube).

So yeah, there it is. Still watching, still obsessed.

Yay! More show recs!! (I decided to spring for a subscription to Viki to feed this addiction, and I’m glad I did.)

Cherry Magic– — Loved this one!! It was so sweet! As long as there is a happy ending, I’m definitely up for more like this.

I will check out Tonhon Chonlateec and He’s Coming to Me. I had dismissed Still 2gether, but I’ll take another look at it because of your rec. Based on your blog post and that super long comment thread, we have almost identical tastes in BL, which has been super fun!

Wish You: Your Melody In My Heart, Oxygen the series, and Ingredients the series are all my “Plan to watch” list on MyDramaList account. (I had to make an account there, as I was losing track of this obsession!)

I can’t wait to start Color Rush as soon as it finishes its run. I’ve been resisting starting anything unless it’s completely available, but we’ll see how long that lasts!

I just finished Why R U this morning, and I wish there more of Saint in the world. He really is a terrific actor, and I love his dynamic with Zee in that show. He’s just so good at giving the looks. 🙂

Have you started TharnType, Pt. 2? It’s another one that I’m waiting for it to end before watching, and I’m assuming there will be an HEA. If not…then I’ll probably skip it. I just can’t handle a sad ending these days. Maybe after the world opens up again…

Have you seen the 9 minute trailer for KinnPorsche:The Series? I’m looking forward to this one! I’ll be nice to get out of the university/high school setting. And Thai mafia guys in love with added family mystery and drama? Bring it on!

And then one last thought…sorry to ramble on so much, but I don’t know anyone who likes these, and I’m dying to talk about them! The Untamed was the show that got me hooked on BL. I know that seems weird since it isn’t technically one, but holy smoke…it’s amazing. If you gave up on it early in the run, I highly recommend sticking with it. Although the Chinese censors forced them to eliminate the kissing and the sex from the show, they definitely did NOT eliminate the gay. The two male leads are most definitely desperately in love with each other, and this is deliberately coded throughout the show. To the extent that in BTS vids, the director and the actors are discussing how deeply in love the characters are in particular scenes and how to make that clear. The show is bonkers, especially in the beginning, when it’s really difficult to know what is happening in the plot. But it all comes together beautifully. And there’s a 20 episode special edition that emphasizes the love story a bit more and condenses the story from 50 episodes to 20. https://youtu.be/SlpEVsKiYCU

Take care, and thanks again for feeding this wonderful addiction I’ve developed!

I’ve come around to the 2gether franchise, but the ending of Still 2g is really quite lovely and worth it if you ask me. It’s sappy, but I like sappy.

          > Wish You: Your Melody In My Heart, Oxygen the series, and Ingredients the series are all my “Plan to watch” list on MyDramaList account. (I had to make an account there, as I was losing track of this obsession!)

Wish you isn’t done yet and I’m afraid it might eb a cliff hanger but the other two are very sweet. I’ve resisted making a MyDrama account but not sure how much longer I’ll last.

          > I can’t wait to start Color Rush as soon as it finishes its run.

It’s truly brilliant, fingers crossed it ends well.

          > I just finished Why R U this morning, and I wish there more of Saint in the world. He really is a terrific actor, and I love his dynamic with Zee in that show. He’s just so good at giving the looks.

What I love about Saint is that he morphs his body for different characters, like his physicality totally evolves, the way he walks and sits and everything it totally different between Tutor and Pete. It’s crazy cool and pretty rare in actors who usually just focus on the face expressions. I hope he gets a ton more work.

          > Have you started TharnType, Pt. 2? It’s another one that I’m waiting for it to end before watching, and I’m assuming there will be an HEA. If not…then I’ll probably skip it. I just can’t handle a sad ending these days. Maybe after the world opens up again…

I think it’s going to end in a wedding. And yeah I’m watching it. It’s erm, not very good.

          > Have you seen the 9 minute trailer for KinnPorsche:The Series?

Yep. Such a long trailer. I’m cautiously intersted. I don’t like mafia stuff, but it looks good. However, I understand from my BL gossip blogs that filing is now delayed again due to Covid 19. I think only Lovely Writer and 1000 stars are still on schedule.

          > And then one last thought…sorry to ramble on so much, but I don’t know anyone who likes these, and I’m dying to talk about them!

Please! It’s the reason I blogged about it, in the hopes I would have others to chat with about this.

          > The Untamed was the show that got me hooked on BL. I know that seems weird since it isn’t technically one, but holy smoke…it’s amazing. If you gave up on it early in the run, I highly recommend sticking with it.

I did exactly that. And I mad at China about Addicted too, so I’m not sure I’m willing to give Untamed and shot when it’s been straight-washed.

          >And there’s a 20 episode special edition that emphasizes the love story a bit more and condenses the story from 50 episodes to 20. https://youtu.be/SlpEVsKiYCU

Oh now this appeals a lot more. I might watch this!

And I’m delighted to have someone join me in my madness.

So somehow I got 2gether and Together With Me mixed up, and I just binged the later. I really enjoyed the main storyline, especially Korn’s love for Knock and how comfortable he seems with his identity. (At least in this one? There might be issues later?) And I enjoyed Yihwa and Fai a lot, particularly Fai. She’s just so fun!. (Of course, there are three Terrible Girls, but that seems par for the course?)

I had major issues with two of the side plots. The teacher one really annoyed me. I’m a high school English teacher, and I REALLY hate storylines where students and teachers have relationships. The power dynamic is just gross, and I can’t watch it. The same went for the Farm/Bright storyline. SO MANY CONSENT ISSUES. Ugh. Not good. I hear these two return in the third installment, Together With Me: The Next Chapter, but I’m not sure anything can redeem their beginning.

I skipped most of Bad Romance because I had tonal whiplash from the the differences from first one. I know it was the first series filmed, so it makes sense that it doesn’t match….but it was too weird for me to process the story. Next up — The Next Chapter. And then Manner of Death after it finishes (and as long as it has at least a somewhat happy ending.) Because…why not just follow the MaxTul train as far as it goes?

    And…then the actual 2gether! 😀

I watched it a while ago, it’s not a favorite because of the weird tonal differences between 1he 3 different series with KornKnock. Although MaxTul are GREAT together.

      > Next up — The Next Chapter.

Next Chapter really mistreats Korn & Knock so if I were you I wouldn’t watch it. but if you do, let me know.

      > And then Manner of Death after it finishes (and as long as it has at least a somewhat happy ending.)

I’m liking Manner of Death (different characters) much better. But I like cozy mysteries. Almost ended, hopefully happily.

2gether and Still 2gether are COMPLETELY different, VERY rom com. I really liked it but it took me at least 3 episodes to get into because there are soem really annoying characters (and character traits) at the beginning. Just give it a try through those first 3 eps, okay. I promise it gets A LOT better out the far end.

Excited to hear your thoughts on the rest of MaxTul
